Dr. Gerald Spindel is one of the area's most experienced laser surgeons. Experience counts and can often be the critical advantage in assuring an excellent result. He is highly regarded as a clinical Ophthalmologist, providing comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages.
Dr. Spindel has been performing Laser Vision Correction for over eight years and has performed thousands of eye surgeries during his thirteen year career. Since 1992 he has been one of the original investigators for the Food and Drug Administration for the excimer laser, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration. His patients results were included in the studies which were presented to the FDA and resulted in the approval of the excimer laser from its onset, he is extremely familiar with its capabilities and has seen the procedure grow in effectiveness and safety.
Dr. Spindel went to Brandeis University where he graduated with honors in biology. He then went on to receive his Medical degree at Boston University. He did his internship at Cambridge City Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. After the completion of his internship, he went to New York City where he completed three years of ophthalmology residency at Long Island Jewish Hospital and, during his last year, was Chief Ophthalmology Resident. Dr. Spindel began his practice in ophthalmology in New Hampshire in 1985. In 1987 he became Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been an active member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, as well as past president of New Hampshire Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He attends a multitude of continuing medical education programs every year in all areas of ophthalmology, but has a particular interest in Laser Vision Correction and cataract surgery.
During his tenure as President of the New Hampshire Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, he was instrumental in bringing many continuing medical education programs to his fellow ophthalmologists in the New England area.
In 1997 Dr. Spindel was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. Through these activities, he has stayed on the cutting edge of the rapidly changing field of ophthalmology.
Locally, Dr. Spindel was Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH for six years. He recently finished his tenure as Chief of Surgery at the hospital. During that time, he was responsible for overseeing the Surgical Quality Assurance Program for the surgeons who operate at Parkland Medical Center.
He now resides in Manchester, NH with his wife Elizabeth, a dentist; and two children, Tyler and Victoria. He enjoys skiing and sailing, and spends a great deal of time fishing with his children.
