I went for a consultation today for LASIK. I have been out of my contacs for 3 weeks. Prior to this my astigmatism was -3.75 in my right eye and today it measured at -5.0. My left eye is -.50 and myopia is about -2.25 in both eyes. The doctor said that this was such high astigmatism that I would likely need at least one enhancement. My corneal thickness in my right eye is 497. I am wondering how often LASIK is done with this high an astigmatism with good results. Also, what is irregular astigmatism? I have not been told I have this but came across it on one of the boards. I have also discovered from reading your boards that I should wait to have LASIK because I am currently trying to get pregnant. Based on this and from what I am reading about wavefront technology, is this something I should consider for the future if I have to wait anyway due to pregnancy? Lastly, I am wondering if you have any recommendations for a surgeon in the Charlotte, NC area? The surgeon at my clinic is Dr. Michael Woodcock. I have found your boards very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Astigmatism means your cornea is not spherical. Regular astigmatism basically means that the astigmatism is symmetric (think of the side of a football). Irregular astimatism is assymetric (warped). Irregular astigmatism is not corrected well with current technology. High astigmatism does lead to a higher enhancement rate. I would not suggest any procedure until your prescription is the same on at least 2 successive measurements. If there is any chance you might be pregnant I suggest you suspend any plans for refractive surgery.
Your cornea sounds to be on the thin side and your astigmatism is high. You need to make sure you don't have a condition called keratoconus or forme fruste keratoconus. LASIK done on patients with these conditions can lead to disastrous results. I suggest you get a second opinion and ask pointedly whether you have these conditions.
Dr Woodcock's primary practice is actually in Fayetteville (a very long way off if you have a problem). He travels to Charlotte and Chapel Hill. There is a Dr. Christenbury (sp?) in Charlotte who you might want to see. Hope this helps.
