I recently went for a consultation at Saddleback Eye Center in Laguna, California. They said that because of my severe astigmatism I'm not eligable for CustomVue, but I'm a great candidate for All Laser Lasik. I'm just wondering that if my astigmatism is so high if it would add more risk to my surgery.

My prescription from my last optomotrist is:

OD
Sphere: +1.50 Cylinder: -5.00 Axis: 015

OS
Sphere: +1.00 Cylinder: -3.25 Axis: 016

The laser they use is the Visx Star S4. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Wow, what a worthless forum this is. Not even one response.

I had my LASIK surgery last Friday. Everything went fine. My vision was 20/20 the day after surgery. I'm experiencing the usual side effects....halos, starbursts, and irritation. Not really bad though...and it's going away more and more each day. I hope this information proves usefull to someone thinking of getting LASIK with astigmatism.

Getting a solid and lasting 20/20 on the first cut with your script is indeed impressive. Some docs wont do that challenging a script. Let's hope regression does not spoil your early result as it sometimes does on higher astig, especially with hyperopic mixed astig like yours. If you're stable after 3 months, you're probably home free.

I'll try and post again after 3 months and let you know my status. Today was a great day. I went with my neices and flew a kite. It was the first time that I wasn't constantly thinking about my eyes. And I was able to see fine. Hopefully things stay this way. I'll try and keep you posted.

Please do let us all know how your healing goes Issac. I had lasik 5 years ago with a mixed astig script but more farsighted than yours and even after enhancements at 6 months did not get a sharp 20/20 uncorrected final result. Only about 20/25 with a small amount of residual + astig. My BCVA is not quite as sharp as it was prelasik. Those of us with challenging scripts run a higher risk of losing one line of BCVA. So far you dont need any correction at all and lets hope and pray you stay that way.

So yesterday I went for my 6 month checkup and everything went great. In my left eye I am 20/15 and in my right I am 20/20. Combined I was able to see 20/15 no problem. I still get dry eyes in the morning, but nothing compared to how it used to be. I put lubricating drops in about 4 times or more a day, sometimes I don't really need them but I put them in anyway. The doctor said this is the way it has to be for at least a year.

Needless to say I am very happy with my results. I hope they continue to get better, or at least don't get worse.

did they leave your mild hyperopia alone or treat both? If I read, hyperopes with astigmastim is very challenging and one website says they can only treat up to 2.5 diopters of astigmastim if your a hyperope up to +4

Good to hear of your sterling outcome Issac, especially with such high astig in a mixed astig script with hyperopia. Goes to show that the Visx 4 technology has come a fairly long way being able to obtain sharp results with tough scripts. You are fortunate you did not have your lasik done 6 years ago on a Visx 2 as I did.

It's been a little over a year now and everything is still good. I must say that I still get dry eyes, mostly in the morning, but it's not anything that is really bad. I don't notice the starbursts as much at night anymore. When my eyes are dry at night I notice them more when driving, but I will say that it's been about a month since I've noticed starbursts at all at night. So it is definitely getting better, not that it was too bad to begin with.

I do notice that my sight has continued to fluctuate. I can tell that at this moment it is not as good as it once was after the surgery. I'm sure I'm still at least 20/20, but it's just not as sharp as I can tell it was before. It's not bad at all, just not as good. I never did go to my one year check up. I should, but the operation seems like it was 100 years ago. I can barely even remember wearing glasses in the first place now.

So I guess my summary is that even if you have a high astigmatism you can still achieve great vision with lasik. I would do this again in a heartbeat. I hope this info helps ease others in their feelings toward lasik.

You should go in and get an accurate refraction to know how how much error has crept in and in what direction. Do changing light and high contrast conditions bother you at all? And how about low light accuity?
