It has been just over a month since I had customized ablation with the wavefront guided machine. I had about -7.5 myopia and -1.5 stigma in both eyes before surgery. As of last week I was tested at 20/20 each eye. Unfortunately I have trouble with ghosts. More precisely, for example, when I look at the full moon at night I see a fuzzy circular blob the same size as the moon that appears to sit on the main image of the moon. This is an almost identical problem in both eyes. When I watch television in a dimly lit room I am distracted by what appears to be a bleeding of the images above the screen. The flaps of my LASIK surgery were created such that they were sliced from the bottom upward. Does anyone have a similar experience?

Gerry What wavefront system did you have surgery done with? What did the Dr. say about your results? Time does sharpen your vision and clean up some of the blurr ect. but only to a certain degree. Good Luck

I don't know the exact type of machine. I know the doctor said it's so easy to do the surgery since you let the machine do all the real work and you just make sure it's calibrated properly. First it ablates the astigmatism then it does the rest. To be honest, my vision is pretty amazing in the daylight ( better than it has ever been even with big thick glasses or contacts.) I wish there were some way of measuring quantitatively the progress of this "irregular astigmatism" with time. I know my pupils dialate to about 8 mm in dim lighting, but the scope of the ablation was a 9 mm radius so it should have covered that. It cost 2000 dollars CDN (I live in Canada.) When I think about it though, it would seem that because the flap is in fact a flap and not a full cut circle, the part that doesn't get cut would be inherently thicker and therefore cause refractive problems in that direction. I may just need to give it more time.

Gerry, flaps are not normally associated with ghosting (whether cut vertically or horizontally). Astigmatism is. At your next checkup get your doctor to use his glass (as if fitting you for spectacles) to test whether you have any residual astigmatism. Sometimes, despite the best efforts of surgeons and laser machines, people's eyes prefer to heal back into a shape similar to what they started with.

You're also still early in the healing process. See how you're seeing at around 3 months post-lasik. I had ghosting in my right eye which disappeared at around 5 months (even though I still kept my astigmatism). Not all ghosts disappear, but some do. If yours do not, and are due to astigmatism, you could always have an enhancement -- when your refraction has stabilized (usually at 3-6 months).

Merlin and I are both very interested in wavefront developments. At your next consultation could you please ask your doctor the name of the system he is using, and how he is finding his results to date? Thanks.
