I am scheduled to have lasik in several days and have noticed that my refraction for astigmatism changed slightly with each refraction. My question is....when the laser is programed do they use the corneal topography to calculate the astigmatism correction or do they use the refraction number. Thanks!

The correction entered into the computer is the refraction corrected by the surgeon's nomogram. Remember, that a refraction is strictly a subjective measurement and small variations from one refraction to the next can be insignificant. Your doctor will guide you regarding how significant, if any, such a difference might be.

Along the subject of correcting astigmatism, how small an error is it possible to correct using the laser. Depending on the day i have -.5 to -1.0 in addition to my -4.0 myopia. Is it possible to correct such a small amount? Thanks for your help!

You have a relatively "small" amount of astigmatism and can be corrected surgically with your amount of nearsightedness.
Good Luck.

Dear Paul,

The refraction number is all that counts. The position of the astigmatism (axis) can be verified with the topography but it is the refraction that
corrects your vision. That is the all important number.
