I was reading about Dr. Bates technique for relaxing the eyes, called palming. He explains: "Cover both eyes with the palms of your hands, your fingers crossed on your forehead. There should be no light, or as little as possible, allowed to enter the eye".
When I do this, for a minute, my glare, halos and starbusrting seems to dissapear. How this works?? It's because the heat of the palms affects the eye in a good way, so they produce a better tear, just for a moment??
How can achieve the palming effects for a longer time??
Thanks.

Do you believe in ghosts? Those who think they have seen a ghost believe in them, but those who have not seen one generally are skeptical. The Bates Method is the same. Some who think they have seen results believe, and those who have not seen results do not.

Many studies have affirmed that he Bates Method simply does not correct refractive error…but nonetheless there are believers out there.

There is a whole lot of controversity reguarding this method and other such eye exercises, however I have seen some indeed improve their vision a little, a few alot. Theres no harm trying, if it works then great, if not, theres always lasik ;)

I just want to know more about the teory behind this palming technique. If palming works for my eyes only for 10 seconds, there must be something related to applying warm to the eyes that makes them more relaxed or whatever. I need to know exactly what's the effect of heat in eyes. Like I said before, palming relieves my glare, ghosting and starburst, but why?? It's because I have poor tear? I have dry eye??

Bates is pseudoscience. Period. If palming works, it may be because of just what you said...it may improve the tear film for a fraction of a minute because of the moisture barrier effect.

Of course, one day someone is going to post that palming over the course of six months caused their starbursting to disappear altogether, thereby confusing coincidence with cause and effect.

If you have warm hands it maybe that by palming you are warming the oils in your eyelids. I.e. releasing the oils from the meiobian glands. Everytime you blink you coat the eye with this oily layer, however if the glands are blocked (which in my opinion is very possible after Lasik- I am 1.5 years post Lasik and suffer blepharitus and never had it before!) the oil can't come out so easily. Ask you eye doctor if you have blepharitus or blocked meiobian glands! if so you need to do lid scrubs and warm compresses, hope the eyes get better!

Thanks Ann, I've come to that conclusion too. Maybe I have MGD, my doctor doesn't seem to prescribe me anything for blepharitis, but I'm doing warm compresses and flax seed oil. I never had blepharitis before LASIK, so I don't know what to think. I believe that anyone who suffers of halos and starburst after LASIK should check if dry eye is causing them, just like in my case.

Hi Mario,

I spoke to my doctor again and she said the dry eye might be becasue of the cold weather but to help keep the eyes moist i heard from a few people to take fish oil 1000mg a day or omega 3 i am going to start taking it tomorrow i would let you know how it goes.

Mario I am in the same boat as you. I had wavefront custom lasik in 9/04 and a custom corneal enhancement on 3/05. I am suffering from glare and halos and starbursts still. I have had severe dry eyes and seen multiple doctors and so on. My dry eyes are starting to be more comfortable to deal with but I can still tell they are dry. I have large pupils. 8mm. I made sure that my ablation zones for both surgerys were adequate for that size. I have 7mm with a blend of 1mm on the first and for the custom enhancement it went out even further so they said thats not the problem. Ive personally seen my wavefront maps with a dilated pupil and every thing was fine. They had explained that all the possible HOA's on the map cannot be seen with the human eye if the numbers on the map were under .40 for the Ladarvision wavefront scan and that would even be hard to see a problem with. My highest number now is the spherical abberation number which is .31 in rt eye and .27 in left which they said is awesome and that was with a dilated pupil which they say could mess up the map to show problems. So having that in mind that I had a good procedure, i decided to go to a corneal specialist I heard of. She had told me that this could take years to heal, that I was very dry and explained how the tear film has to get smooth to stop the light scatter. Months later I went back to her and told her I feel a bit better she looked and said I should be encouraged cause its coming along. I then told her that I dont notice much difference in the glare though. She replied by telling me that what she sees may not be in correlation to the way I see cause there is still the element of dryness involved and just to wait it out. I can see 20/15 but things are just not as sharp as I know they should be but I can tell thats from the dryness cause that has improved in these past months. I just hope the glare will go along with it. How are your eyes doing Mario now? And Dr. Trattler do you know about the Ladarvision maps and the numbers like I mentioned above about anything under .40 in the HOA's is nearly perfect like they told me?

Hi Phil, I'm still suffering with dry eye and glare, loss of contrast, ghosting, blurry vision, floaters, etc...

Every Dr. I see think the HOA's are a result of my pupil size, ablation zone, etc. but I'm sure dry eye is causing the majority of this symptoms because I can note a difference when I don't spend 8 hours in front of a computer.

Every weekend I spend 4-5 hours out on the country with very dim light and that relaxes my eyes a great deal, after that I can't barely see any glare or starbursts.

I'm hoping that when my eyes start producing more tears all this symptoms would disappear forever because it's very hard to deal with this condition every day.

Are you on restasis or any supplement to fight dry eye?
