I'm schedule to have lasik done at the South Coast Laser Center in Southern California. I am told that they use the Nidek 2000. The center says that it is the lastest thing and was approved by the FDA November 2000. When I search the Web, I don't see anything about the Nidek 2000. Is it FDA approved? Is it the lastest technology? What kind of laser is it? (broad beam, scanning or spot)

Its a Nidek 5000. It's a piece of junk with a rough ablation profile that screwed up my eyes twice. Stay away from this antiquated laser. Try an autonomous or newer one. Better yet, WAIT. Don't do LASIK at all. COrneaplasty and topographically assisted techniques are coming along soon, and they promise to yield much better results.
Best of all, go get contacts and take a good vacation with the $ you save from not doing LASIK.

The Nidek is a very good laser. I know of 5 people who have had surgery with it and they all LOVE the results. i had mine done by the same doctor as the did but on the VISX s2 because of my astigmatism and farsightedness. Don't let those with poor results disuade you, those with great results far outnumber the bad.

As a follow on to Mike's comments, yes the good results do far outweigh the bad.
But, when it happens to YOU, all bets are off. When the risk is 100% YOURS, as it is with this procedure, you must approach things very, very warily. YOU will be the one stuck with the poor results.
Check Dr. Horn's ablation profiles of different lasers at www.chicagolasercenter.com. You will see that the Nidek has far and away the roughest profile. Imagine driving a car on a road like that...you'd need new shocks and a front end alignment in a new york minute.

Mike: are you having any night vision problems as a result of the VISX elliptical ablation which is used to treat astigmatism? Generally speaking, the narrow meridian is generally smaller than most people's scotopic pupils.

Frank:
I have not experienced any night vision problems since my surgery. I do get minor starbursts from oncoming headlights but not enough to cause a problem. It seems to be greatest at dusk, when it's not really dark but not full light either.
The only thing that bothers me is when I have bright light from my left side I tend to get a little bit of contrast loss. Kind of like too much light is coming in.
