I understand that the FDA is currently reviewing new software that will accomidate for large pupils in Lasiks. How can I find out more information on this? Like when the upgrade will be approved. advantages and dissadvantages with regards to having Lasiks with large pupils. If anyone has any information that might help, I would appreciate a responce.
Thank you!!

Most of the latest generation LASIK lasers already handle somewhat large pupils. Among these are the Autonomous LADARVision 2000, Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217, and Visx S3. I believe that, for some of these lasers, going from a small treatment area to a larger treatment area was pretty much just a software upgrade. However, such an upgrade would require FDA approval in the U.S.

Perhaps your doctor was referring to another laser which is expecting FDA approval for such an upgrade.

Each of these lasers have different capabilities in terms of treatment area and the initial prescription. You need to ensure that the laser you choose is fully capable of treating your eyes. Do your homework.

By the way, what is your prescription and pupil size?

Than you very much for this information, I guess I need to do alot of homework. My eyes are a
-8.00 on the left & -8.50 on the right. They told me that one pupil was 7.5mm and the other was slightly bigger. Which type of laser would you recommend that I use considering my prescription?

...no laser.

DO NOT do the procedure. You have a very high risk profile for post-op visual aberrations due to the combination of your scrip and large pupils.

If you still want to do it, get at least three opinions from qualified opthalmologists, including one that does not do RS. Then, spend some time doing searches here and on surgicaleyes regarding pupil size and scrip combos.

Time is on your side. Try contacts. RS is irreversible, and the adverse effects are profoundly life-altering.

Your combined high prescription and large pupils are a problem.
The Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217 is only approved to treat up to -7.0 O.D. That is out.
The Visx S3 has an automatic reduction of treatment size for prescriptions beyond -6.0 O.D. I would rule that out.
The Autonomous LADARVision 2000 could handle it provided that you have enough corneal thickness -- and that's a big if. Larger treatment zones require ablating more tissue. Furthermore, the amount of tissue ablated is proportional to your prescription. Given these two factors, you still may not be a candidate for LASIK.

Thank for the information George! I appreciate it. Since you know alot about the different types of Lasers, do you know anything about the Nidek EC-5000? This it the laser they use at the place I had my consultation. They are the ones that told me they where comming out with the new software for their laser that would provide for the larger pupils. Do you think that even if they come out with that upgrade there will still be a problem with my prescription?

Last I knew, the Nidek EC-5000 received pre-market approval from the FDA for a 6.5 mm CAZ + 1 mm transition zone. This is NOT adequate for your pupil size.
