I went to the ophthalmologist for some (pre-lasik)tests today and here's what I was able to gather:
pupil measurement (measured by assistant): 7mm (the ophthalmologist measured 6.5mm in my previous visit to him about 2 weeks ago).
astigmatism ~1.5 on each eye
pre-dilation
OD:-8.25
OS:-11.75
post-dilation
OD:-8
OS:-11
corneal thickness 580mm
steepness: 45
The ophthalmologist uses the Visx Laser (he has performed ~550 Lasik operations) which he said removes ~12-13um of the cornea per diopeter of nearsightedness. Based on my thickness, according to him, I would still have enough cornea for a followup, if needed. Also, according to the doctor, my steepness is good for the surgery as well. He mentioned that the chance that I would need a follow-up is about 50-50.
He is putting me in touch with a few people who have had high myopia and gotten the Lasik done. One woman had -12 in both eyes and did not need a follow-up (!!!). I intend mainly to check out what their experience is with the side effects and such.
Based on the above, are there any danger flags indicated?
The ophthalmologist mentioned the "standard stuff" for complications (dry eyes, starbursts, etc.) that may arise, but still felt that I was a "good candidate". I have read on this site and others that the combination of high myopia and large pupil size is a bad combination). I would love to have Lasik done, but my main concern is not compromising my night/low-light vision, as I run/bike early in the morning...
thanks for any info
Mike
