Despite some forums suggesting that my level of myopia (-14 in both eyes) is correctable through laser surgery it is pretty much at the limits of the procedure. The front of my eye is very flat as well which I understand further limits the potetnial of laser surgery being successful.

I also understand that the intraocular implant is available but I was wondering if anyone was aware of any new procedures that might be coming up in the next 5-10 years that might provide other options for high myopes.

One I recall reading about was proposing altering the shape of the scelra. This would be amazing if they could do, becasue not only would it correct the myopia, but it would also (I assume) reduce the potential of a Retinal detachment as the eye shape would put less stress on the Retina.

If anybody has any information on future research I would really be interested to hear about it.

By the way it is nice to know that there are others out there with high myopia, as it can be quite a depressing condition

You are right, it is very depressing to be highly myopic (I'm -10.75 in right, -11.75 in left). My biggest pet peeve is when I used to go to the optometrist for annual check-ups and the staff would make comments such as "geez, you have really bad eyes"...it always seemed insensitive to me.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I think you are doing the right thing by waiting for better technology. I just had Lasik about a month ago and I am having many unpleasant side effects. I only found out after the surgery that high nearsighted patients suffer more problems and take longer to heal. Even though I had asked my doctor about this before the surgery, he said that there were no additional risks. I feel that I was misled. I have learned through my own experience and through much research (unfortunatley done after the surgery when it was too late to change my mind) that there are indeed more problems.

I wouldnt take the risk if your -14, thats way too high. do you have any astigmistim? If little or non, an implantable contact lense is a much better alternative, they are using it on myopes from -8 to -30(or even higher!) Lasik seems to be discouraged if you are over -8 to -10 due to its increased risks
