I just had a screening for lasik and was told I was a good - not great candidate. I have -10 in both eyes and thin corneas according to the screening surgeon. He told me that I should not do the intralase because of the thin corneas. Before I go through with the surgery I would love another opinion! I know there are good results with custom lasik- but I am wondering if there is proof that the intralase is safer and a better option?

I am not a doctor but ive been to one who suggested intralase for me since he said you can make a thinner flap with intralase. How thick are your corneas? This info will really help the doctors that post here give you an informed answer. Pupil size also matters. I can state that for me, the intralase flap would be about 130(my doctor said he can make a 100 micron thin flap) but ive never heard any flap being this thin so ill go with 130. Because I got huge pupils, I need a larger ablation zone. I figure 100+ for my -5 diopters. My cornea is 550 and after all is said and done ill have 320 or less remaining cornea. Some will go as low as 250 but others want to keep it at 300. If I were to get lasik, it would be a one shot deal cause I wont have enough cornea after intralase to keep from going below 300 if I need an enhancement.
What I said was my example and case and may be different for you depending on corneal thickness and pupil size. There may also be the option of partial correction to remove much of your -10 diopters and reduce your glasses dependacy. I dont know why your doctor declined intralase, but one of the doctors here may know why.

I am affraid I was so overwhelmed I did not get any of the specifics on what my cornea thickness is. He did say I would only have about 30% of cornea left after lasik for enhancement if needed.

Before doing any lasik or enhancements, youll need to know your cornea thickness, pupil size and everything else about you. Also get more than 1 opinion from doctors. I have seen different doctors say "not a good candidate" or "you will do" on the same person but different doctors. Be aware of all risks and also research on the net. Good luck and be safe :)
