I live in Eastern Oregon and I have been told I am not a candidate for Lasik. I have thin corneas. I am trying to find a surgeon in Oregon or the Tri-cities area of Washington. I am also looking at IOL options. It seems I can go with the ones in front of my lens or remove my lens. Any thoughts. My Myopia is -13 and -13.75 and I have astimatism above 3.

Greg,

I don't know of a specific doctor that does phakic IOLs in your area, but here are some references: www.aao.org and www.ascrs.org are professional societies' websites that you can do a doctor search for qualified MDs. Also, www.staar.com is the company that makes the Visian ICL, and can provide the names of trained surgeons. www.amo-inc.com makes the Verisyse IOL and can do the same for it's product.

Good luck!

Dr. Furlong

-13 with high astigmastim is well out of the safe range of lasik for everyone. I havent heard much about toric IOLs but I know astigmastim is not easy to correct with IOLs. Whats your age? If you are at an age where you havent accomodation(how old are you), get the aphakic IOLs because this will save you from ever needing cateract surgury down the road. If IOLs cant address your high astigmastim you may need AK, PRK or glasses for your cylindar component. How well do you see with glasses now? Without glasses, what can you see? How far can you count fingers?
