I'm a -8.5 sph x -1.5 cyl x 010 axis and -8.25 sph x -1.75 cyl x 175 axis. I just came back from an initial Lasik consult and found out that my cornea thickness is 505 and 495. My eyes were very dry today and the schimmer test only wetted the 2nd or 3rd line on the strip. I have to use lubricating drops for two weeks and return to complete the exam. The surgeon suggested I look into ICL during the two weeks. He said Lasik may still be an option. Does anyone one have any experience with ICL? I'm also leaning towards looking into PRK. Can anyone guesstimate what cornea thickness would be left with Lasik?
Thanks for your help

Your surgeon can come pretty close to determining what your final thickness will be. What is really crucial is how much tissue is left under the flap. A typical LASIK flap is about 150 microns thick. The amount of tissue removed under the flap depends on the particular laser, and whether the treatment is custom or conventional etc but figure around 15 microns removal per diopter of correction (8 x 15 = 120 microns removed). Therefore you can guess that in your case you would have about 230 microns left under the flap: too thin! You could conserve tissue by going with a thinner flap (maybe a 100 micron thick flap with IntraLase) but you may still be too thin. PRK is definitely a better choice as is the implantable contact lens (Visian or Verisyse). Please go over the pros and cons of each with your surgeon before making up your mind.
