I was in similar circumstances to you. I am 54 years old,
however, I had RK performed in 1986, with good results. I had 4
incisions in my right eye and 8 in my left. Several years ago my
right eye became a little farsighted, but my left eye became
quite farsighted. It seems to be common for RK patients around
50 years old to become farsighted.
I researched a lot of options and spoke to a lot of people. I live
in San Diego, and I would sometimes drive the 100 miles to Los
Angeles to speak to a specialist. I finally came across a
ophthalmologist that is very familiar with previous RK patients.
She was very aware of how my eyesight would change
throughout the day, so she made several measurements at
various times of the day. We discussed what surgical options I
had, and the only real choice was PRK. So, early May, 2006, I
had PRK performed on my left eye only. Today I am very
pleased with the result, and my distance vision appears to be
very close to 20/20, and my farsightedness for my left eye has
mostly gone.
I would not consider Lasik. PRK is really the only choice if you
had RK. You should find a ophthalmologist that is aware of what
RK is. If you have PRK performed, here are my observations:
1. It hurts a lot for several days afterwards. All you want to do is
sleep for the first few days.
2. Vision fluctuates a lot until a full 3 months after surgery.
3. You probably won't be able to use the eye for 6 weeks after
the operation.
If you want to fly to San Diego, here is the ophthalmologist I
used and recommend:
Dr Sandy Feldman
