Has anyone out there heard of a condition called "Sands of the Sahara"? From what I'm told, it's an inflammation under the flap. Has anyone experienced it? What's the treatment? What's the prognosis?

Sands of Sahara (SOS) is otherwise known as Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis (DLK) and has been previously discussed on this forum. You should be able to find it in the archives of this web site. It is an inflammation or swelling of the corneal flap and space underneath it. It's cause is unknown although there are as many theories about it as there are doctors. The prognosis is very good. The earlier treatment is started the better and ranges from careful observation, to using steroid eyedrops and/or pills, to lifting the flap up and irrigating it and replacing the flap. Regardless, early treatment is important. Please let us know if you need more information.
Good luck.
