I had bilateral lasik January 2000. Pre-op I was -4.50. Post-op I vary between 20/25 and 20/30. Within a week post-op, I noticed in my left eye a blurry, jagged streak emanating from light sources (traffic lights, the moon, car headlights and taillights, even glare from chrome car bumpers, etc). The streak emanates at about one o'clock and seven o'clock from a light source and extends approx 5 times the diameter of the light source. I also experience mild halos, mild dryness and double/ghost images, especially of light sources. The surgeon informed me I had three microstriae over the lower part of the pupil. In March 2000, he refloated the flap and tried to work out the striae, with moderate success. They are still there, but smaller. Later, he said he doubts the striae are causing the streaking, but the laser may have induced some astigmatism that is causing those vision problems. The striae run the same direction as the streaks I see. The streaking, halos, and ghost images remain virtually unchanged. Now in August 2001, he is talking about an enhancement surgery to try and improve my vision from 20/25 or 20/30 and to perhaps clear up the streaking. He says he can just lift the flap and apply the laser. (1) Is lifting the flap now, 18 months later, advisable/possible? (2) If so, must the inside of the flap be treated somehow to smooth out its inner surface before replacing against the eye? (3)Is laser-induced astigmatism really possible? (4) If so, would it cause my kind of vision problems? (5) Is there an alternate strategy? (6) Is there a true specialist out there with experience in my symptoms who can accurately analyze, diagnose and treat?
