My name is Roger Bratt and I had LASIK in
San Diego.
During my pre-op consultation with the surgeon,
I asked a question about the downside of LASIK.
I don't recall the question -- I didn't have
a tape recorder with me -- but it was tantamount
to, "OK, give me the bad news, Doc."
To which Doctor X responded, and conveyed
two facts:
* that he had had laser surgery
* that he used "a few eyedrops every now and then."
That was it. That was his verbal response
to my inquiry regarding the downside of LASIK.
There's more.
I subsequently found out that my surgeon featured
on his website the fact that he had PRK, and
that he had "exchanged PRK's" with another
surgeon. That is, they performed PRK on each
other.
In other words, when I asked my surgeon a question about the downside of LASIK, he responded
with an answer about his experience with PRK.
Of course, I have since learned that there is
an enormous difference between LASIK and PRK.
I am amazed that someone who holds himself
out to the public as a medical professional
would use his PRK experience to answer a question
about LASIK. He knew full well that we were
in the closing stages of the pre-op consultation.
Imagine going to the dentist and asking a question
about the downside of a root canal, and
having him answer your question by telling
you about a small cavity he had filled in his
own mouth.
My surgeon has over 15 years experience performing
refractive surgery. He also has the proverbial
academic affiliations. Oh yeah, he also has
a few "famous patients" -- athletes etc.
Just to let people know, none of those
"curriculum vitae" will protect you from a
doctor who places his business profit before
your own ocular health.
Nor will those credentials protect you from
a surgeon who is willing to do what my surgeon
did with the truth when he answered my question
about the downside of LASIK.
A surgeon can have the most advanced excimer
laser tracking system in the world. But if
he has to twist the truth to "get you in the
chair", all those degrees, all those professional
associations, all those advertisements, none
of that will protect you.
I thought what I was going through with LASIK
was about as risky as getting a tooth filled
at a dentist.
I found out otherwise.
Sincerely,
Roger
