I have read many good things about Dr. Assil. Was wondering if anyone has any negative comments about an experience with Dr. Assil. I am scheduled to have a consult with him next month. I want to compare him and his facility to Saddleback Eye Center. I had a consult at Saddleback a week ago, where they told me I was a good candidate for "all laser" LASIK.

Both Dr. Assil and Dr. Manger are considered excellent LASIK surgeons. Dr. Manger favors Intralasik as do I and Dr. Assil usually favors a mechanical keratome. You will just have to listen to the pros and cons. For some patients, there are strong reasons for Intralasik but for most patients the resulsts and safety are quite comparable.

I appreciate your help. Do you give the patient the option of using one or the other?

I encourage most patients to choose the Intralase but I don't insist on it unless their are very compelling reasons to do it. If they can afford the increase in fees I just feel it is safer and more predictable to do it that way but I also insist that they do one eye at a time so I am very conservative about my patients eyes.

One eye at a time, meaning you schedule two separate surgeries? And which laser do you use? This site is extremely helpful. :)

I have performed laser vision correction surgery since 1990 and always do one eye at a time. The reasons are on my web site at www.drsalz.com I just feel its safer. You have been nearsigthed all your life so what's the hurry. We have 3 lasers and a 4th if you count the Intralse. The one we select depends on your preoperative measurements of pupil size, aberrations, abount of correction and corneal thickness.

How large can a lasik ablation zone be? I heard its usually 6mm but problem is my pupils are 8mm or more, this reason alone has caused me to hesisate due to possible night vision loss. Then theres the issue of not being able to see well from near, especially when presbyopia sets in. I have some irregular astigmistim so this means I can stand to benefit from wavefront
