Hi,
I had RK surgery back in 1981/82. My right eye was overcorrected and is now far sighted. My left eye was operated on twice, and I still have to wear a contact lens. The doctor who performed the surgery retired in 1999 and no longer has copies of any records.

I now have cataracts in both eyes with the right eye being the worse of the two. My problem is I don't know what my refractions were before surgery. The records are no longer available. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital for quite a few tests and was told by the doctor there that he didn't want to proform cataract surgery on me because they wouldn't be sure of what kind of lens to put in. I finally tracked down the doctor who did my surgery, and he told me to contact Dr. Jack Holladay because he might be able to figure out what lens to use for the cataract surgery.

Do you have any advice on how to proceed.

Thanks.

Dee West

Dr. Holladay has developed a method to determine the appropriate power of intraocular lens (IOL) for a cataract patient who had RK. His website is http://www.docholladay.com

I suspect that with a bit of detective work you may be able to find your prior prescription. If you have any of your old glasses from before RK, the script can be derived from them. If you ordered contacts through an 800 service, they may very well still have your information. Any optometrist that you saw before RK no matter how many years ago may still have your information buried in their files. You would be amazed at how long some things are held.

Glenn says you might be surprised how long someone has kept your files. Probably correct.

You should know that cataract surgery after refractive surgery is NOT a slam dunk. I did not have PRK, but lasik. I'm trying to think of how the difference between post-lasik and post PRK, but can't.

My cataract surgeon was my lasik surgeon. 5 years between surgeries. Even with prior EXACT measurements, I came out a whopping -4.33. Way off, halfway back to what I was pre lasik.

Good luck and proceed with caution. I knew there was a fair possibility of difficulty, and sure nuf' there was. I do hope you have a successful cataract surgery. My doc is an experienced lasik and cataract surgeon, but the numbers just didn't crunch in the end.
