I sought 3 opinions, before I had PRK custom wavefront surgery 9 weeks ago. I started out with thin corneas about 510 OD and 520 OS. The manifest refraction was OD: -6.25 + .50 X 140 And OS: -6.50 + .50 x 20.

My surgery went fine (says my Doc) But unfortunately for me it is not that great. I am now hyperopic +1 OD and +.5 OS. I also have astigmatism OS and I see a bit of double vision without my new (temporary) glasses. Oh yes, I also have dry eyes and need drops every hour or so, I can drive OK, without glasses, but I cannot see clearly indoors. It is like I am looking through a soft filter on a camera lens. My cornea thickness is about 400 central now. My surgeon said he could probably do an enhancement at 3 months out. My question is, Now that my corneas are so thin am I taking a large risk in doing an enhancement? Should I seek a second opinion?

My Doc is very happy with my outcome and keeps putting up the Big E on the chart and saying, “Remember, you couldn’t even see this when you first came here”. Also, my Doc says I am 20/25 OD and 20/40 OS, but these numbers mean nothing to me when I see things blurry. I am starting to loose confidence in him. He has prescribed Acular drops for the left eye, which he said may clear things up for me. He wasn’t cheap either ($4500 for both eyes) If he was anticipating this outcome, why didn’t he say “I can get you out of contact lenses, but you won’t see as clearly as you did with them.” I cannot even use over-the-counter reading glasses since I have astigmatism now. After reading the posts on this website, I am thinking that I should be glad my outcome was not worse.

I had a similar experience also, and am 9 weeks post op and still do not have good vision, prior to the surgery I could see fine, especially close up, now that is gone! I have no faith in my doctor anymore and have now contacted the leading cornea specialist in my area to do the next and hopefully "final" enhancement. He is world renowned and has advised me to wait at least another 4 months, based on my experience I think that is good advice, after all you can't grow thicker corneas, if my cornea becomes thinner and problems occur, I would need a cornea transplant! trust your gut

I had PRK done on both of my eyes in Nov 2004. My vision was blurry for a few months, but it finally cleared up after about 9-10 months. I'm 44 and see well both distance and close. My doctor prescribed Restasis for my dry eyes and it worked very well. You are just over 2 months post-op, hang in there and be patient.

Thank you for responding, John. Can I ask if you had astigmatism after the surgery? Also, were you initially farsided after the surgery? - It is so hard to compare as everyone has different variables involved.

Thank you for responding. I think you are right. I should trust my gut, (which tells me my doc has not been straight with me). Are you having both eyes enhanced with the new doc? - Honestly, I am very reluctant to let anyone do this again.

Cynthia, I had slight astigmatism after the surgery, which I didn't have before. But it's not bad and really didn't bother me that much. I was not farsighted after the surgery. In fact the doctor thought I was a little under corrected and discussed with me about possible enhancement in six months. However, my vision really improved in the months following the surgery. I also had dry eyes but using Restasis rellly helped. Overall, I'm happy with my results. PRK recovery can be a long journey, good luck.
