I had lasik three months ago and opted for monovision. What has surprised me is that I have completely lost my near vision in the eye that was corrected for distance. HANG ON...HERE IS THE RUB: Prior to surgery I could read just fine with my contacts in or glasses on. I have read many places that if you could read with correction before surgery that you should be able to read just the same after lasik. And, no, I was not overcorrected. Any ideas on what happened???

You didn't mention how old you are, but if you weren't overcorrected, then I can only conclude that your contact lenses must have been undercorrected (you were a bit nearsighted with your contacts on). Otherwise, this might be a good example of how predicting the future, particularly when it comes to the practice of medicine, is not always possible. That's the best I can come up with!! good luck.

I am 45 but to further illustrate my point....My undercorrected eye (for monovision) ended up way too undercorrected (or regressed) so in the meantime I was given a contact to bring me to 20/20 while waiting enhancement. I can read just fine with the contact in. Dang...as I write this I realize that just blew your possible theory of my contacts being too weak. (I had never thought of that and was thinking that may have been a possible explanation). I, of course, have mentioned this situation to my surgeon. To sortof prove me wrong so to speak, he gave me something to read with the various size of print and then he put a lens in front of my eye. Without even realizing what he was getting at, I went way to the bottom of the reading material and read the tiniest of print. He just looked at his two Doctors in training who were in the room with him and said, "I don't know". I didn't even catch on to what he was getting at until one of the Dr's helpers said, "He doesn't know how you could read that while looking through a lens of that power." I must say it was disappointing to lose that close vision over night when I did not expect it based on that reading I had done. You can imagine the qualms I am going to have when we go to enhance the "monovion" eye. What if the same thing happens again?
