I've been experimenting with monovision (contacts) to see if I like it, and pres is left eye -7 r eye -6.5. I could tolerate a left eye contact pres. of -6 without any problems, but couldn't tolerate a -5.5.
I"ve been reading all of the recent posted questions on monovison and mine is: does a correction of 20/30 mean a "1 dioper change" and 2nd would this be sufficient enough of a lasik surgery change for at least a few years? I am a few months shy of 43 yr old and still not having any difficulty with reading up close. If I have the surgery I would like to enjoy it without the use of reading glasses at least for a few years! which is why I am considering monovision. I realize at some point I will need them, but currently don't.
Last I read that sometimes patients are slightly overcorrected, at which point would that put someone into the need of reading glasses even if they did not need them prior to the surgery?

Unfortunately, there is no direct correlation between measured vision (20/20, 20/30, etc) and prescription. In my experience, however, -1.00 typically is in the fuzzy 20/40 range. -1.00 diopter should give you several years of near vision.
Overcorrection, even to a mild degree, could tip you over the edge on day one. There are numerous messages on this site to demonstrate this. You may ask your surgeon to err on the conservative side to guard against this sort of outcome.
Good Luck, Dean Hu

If you're not having a problem with reading up close, why not just have your dominant eye corrected for distance like I did? They left my other eye alone. (I'm 55.) I can even see up close better now (teeny print on Thomas Guide map pages). Distance wise, I'm seeing 20-20, but a little blurry. I have very slight halos at night, but it's my uncorrected eye--not the corrected eye. I'm getting along great with it.
