I am having a consultation this Friday for lasik. I am 46 yrs old and am having trouble with close up vision. I am wondering if my close up vision after lasik will require me to wear glasses. Can you give me the pros and cons of having my eyes corrected for mono vision. I am not sure whether or not it would bother me to not see evenly out of both eyes but I am also wondering about the benefits of lasik if I will still have to wear glasses? Do you know if patients are happy after having the mono vision correction? Thank you in advance for your help. I appreciate this web site!

This has been a question freqently asked on this board. I ONLY do monovision surgery IF the patient currently wears monovision contact lenses or tries them for a month and decides they like it. I would suggest you do the same. Since I've instituted this policy, my enhancement rate has gone way down because most were patients who had monovision LASIK who later decided they didn't like it. Thousands of people wear monovision contacts. The only way you'll know is to try it.

My situation may be a bit different from yours. My close-up vision was great (even teeny numbers on the back of credit cards). I'm 55. Instead of having both eyes corrected (I was told I would lose my close-up vision), they just did my right (dominant) one. I tried the contact in my right eye & only tested it out for about 20 minutes before I decided I wanted to do it. I don't need glasses any more. I drive at night, with only slight halos. No problems with depth perception. Having the two eyes with one far & one near doesn't bother me at all. I can see my computer screen, read teeny print still, & see 20-20, although signs are a bit blurry--but I can read them. I love it & am very glad I did it! Good luck.

Do you know what the acuity of your undercorrected eye is, i.e., 20/40,20/50?
