Y. Ralph Chu, MD is an ophthalmologist with subspecialty expertise in corneal, cataract, refractive, laser, and glaucoma surgery. He was born and raised in Chicago, IL and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Northwestern University where he was enrolled in the honors program in medical education. While attending medical school he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. After receiving his doctor of medicine degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1992, he went on to Duke University in Durham, NC to complete his ophthalmology residency. He then received a scholarship through the HEED Ophthalmic Foundation which allowed him to complete his subspecialty fellowship training in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery and glaucoma at the Phillips Eye Institute under the direction of doctors Lindstrom, Samuelson & Hardten.
Dr. Chu has an active medical practice in both St. Paul and Minneapolis where he participates in clinical research concerning refractive, cataract, cornea, and glaucoma surgery. He is involved in the education of fellows and residents as a clinical instructor in ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota and as an attending physician at the Hennepin County Medical Center and Veteran's Administration Hospital in Minneapolis. He also holds teaching positions at the Phillips Eye Institute and the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center. As a proctor for Laser Vision Centers, inc. and Chiron, Inc., he instructs other physicians in LASIK, PRK, PTK and ALK. He has also published several chapters concerning refractive and cataract surgery including topics such as radial keratotomy, astigmatic keratotomy, and laser in situ keratomileusis.
