Dr. Mark Cohen completed his medical degree at the internationally-renowned McGill University, where he was the recipient of the Holmes’ gold medal, awarded to the graduate with the highest standing. He then specialised in ophthalmology at McGill, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in surgery of the cornea, including laser refractive surgery. Dr. Cohen is one of less than a dozen surgeons in Canada with this subspecialized training.

Dr. Cohen is a certified C-LASIK instructor; one of 14 surgeons in North America with this designation to teach LASIK. He has lectured and taught the PRK and LASIK procedures to over 100 eye surgeons and ophthalmologists-in-training. He has given 6 international courses on beginner and advanced LASIK techniques. Dr. Cohen is a co-author of the governmental Council for the Evaluation of Health Care Technology’s report on LASIK and PRK.

Dr. Cohen has worked in several laser centers in Canada, including Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. Many of his patients come from the U.S. Northeast and New England areas.

Dr. Cohen has an extensive experience in laser surgery with several types of lasers and microkeratomes and has completed more than 13 500 laser refractive procedures, including over 13 000 LASIK procedures. He was one of the first surgeons in North America to use a scanning spot laser and large flap microkeratome.

As a cornea specialist, Dr. Cohen instructs and works at the teaching hospital of the University of Sherbrooke, where he performs anterior segment surgery, including cornea transplants, clear lens replacement and cataract surgery.

Dr. Cohen is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He is a founding member and the current president of the Canadian Association of University Professors of Refractive Surgery. He is also a member of the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
