Night glare and halos?
Night glare after LASIK appears to be a function of both the amount of myopia that is treated with the laser and the pupil size in dim illumination. The presence of night glare/halos before laser vision correction increases the risk that night glare will be present after surgery. During the pre-surgical exam, a careful workup will include measurement of pupillary diameter under dim illumination. Once the amount of refractive error to be treated has been determined, the surgeon should discuss the risks of having post-surgery night glare. Since the diameter of the laser beam used to treat the eye is up to 6.5mm in both the VISX and Summit laser, patients with dim-illumination pupil sizes of 6.5 mm or larger will be at higher risk of developing night glare. Fortunately, many patients who experience night glare will have a their symptoms resolve over the months that follow their surgery. One final note – some people will experience night glare and halos because of either residual (untreated) post-surgery astigmatism or post-surgery irregular astigmatism.
