Infection after LASIK or PRK is rare. However, there is a risk of infection with these procedures, and if an infection occurs, there can be significant visual loss. The most common infections after LASIK appear to be due to Gram-positive bacteria and Mycobacterium. The LASIK/PRK surgeon should recommend a number of safety instructions that will help prevent infection. These instructions may include no swimming in a pool or hot tub for 2-3 weeks after surgery. The surgeon will also place their patient on the appropriate antibiotic eye drop after surgery to decrease the risk of infection.
