Irregular Astigmatism FAQ

What are the common reasons for the development of irregular astigmatism?
Irregular astigmatism refers to a condition in which the surface of the eye is not smooth. This can cause distortion of vision, along with decreased vision and double vision. There are multiple causes for irregular astigmatism after LASIK, but fortunately this condition is uncommon. An irregular flap with striae or folds can induce some irregular astigmatism. Please see striae for more information on this subject. Other causes include non-homogenous laser treatment (in which the laser does not treat each portion of the cornea equally), decentered laser treatment, or irregular healing by the patient. Central islands, which is a condition in which the laser treatment provides less treatment to the center of the cornea and more treatment to the peripheral cornea, are another cause of irregular astigmatism (please see central island discussion for more information)
