Does that mean that LASEK is a better procedure than LASIK
This is still very controversial. Although LASEK provides very nice visual results with a low risk profile - there is still a chance of vision loss due to infection or corneal haze. The risk of vision loss appears very low. Another potential advantage is that there may be less risk of ectasia with LASEK than with LASIK. However, the risk of ectasia appears to be well less than 1 in 50,000 (2002).
What is all of the hype about LASEK?
LASEK is becoming very popular with a number of eye surgeons - who find that LASEK can provide the same visual results as LASIK with potentially less risk - since no cutting of a flap is required. As well, there are reports that there is less dry eye with LASEK as compared to LASIK. Updated July 2002
