What complications can occur with LASEK here we are talking about surface laser rather than LASIK)
LASEK is a procedure where the epithelium is pushed off to the side, and then the laser is applied. The epithelium is then repositioned. Over the next 3-5 days - the epithelium is replaced. During this healing process, there is a risk of infection. The actual risk of infection is still unknown, but many experts guess that the risk is about 1 in 5000. Another risk is called corneal haze. Ultraviolet light seems to induce in some patients a situation where the cornea becomes cloudy/hazy. Studies have found that the risk of this haze is eliminated if there is complete avoidance of ultraviolet light. However, in people who have high exposure, there is a risk of corneal haze - which can affect vision. The risk of haze is higher with higher degrees or preoperative refractive error. Recent studies have suggested that oral vitamin C can prevent haze from developing (Aleksander Stojanovich, MD - Norway).
