"What really happens during the healing process" Posted by Aron - Castle Rock, CO on 20:17:30 11/02/2000

I have now been 4 weeks since having my Lasik surgery. I opted for monovision. I have haloing and star patterns at night like so many others I have read on this bulletin board. There are many comments about the final outcome, when it comes to haloing and star patterns resolving themselves, assuming that the correction during the surgery is within expected tolerances. I am curious about the healing process, in so far as what is really happening over such a long period of time that final outcomes can take 3-6 months. My corneal flaps have healed very well, and even at the 1 week checkup, they were not visible under the microscope. Since the eye is one of the fastest healing organs, it puzzles me that complete healing takes months. Is the molecular level of healing at the treated site understood?
Thanks for any comments.
Regards,
Aron

The eye is not one of the fastest healing organs. There are major portins of the eye, particularly the cornea, which are not vascularized or are minimally vascularized. As a result, healing is a more protracted process.
There are medical and opthalmic resources on the Web that you may want to consult to help familiarize you with the healing characteristics of the human body, and more specifically the eye.
While typically encountered earlier in the healing process, halos and starbursts are more a function of dynamics related to pupil size and ablation zone size, and/or residual prescription.
I hope your surgery turns out well for you!
