My son is having LASIK soon and has to decide between the two types of equipment for the doctor to use. The Nidek is much less expensive. The doctor's office staff is really pushing the VISX Star 4 because they say it compensates for any movement of the eye during the surgery. From what I have read, there is no difference in the results.
Please advise. They have him worried about not choosing the VISX and having his eyes damaged with the "older" Nidek machine.

Wavefront guided treatment with the VISX platform will provide superior visual results compared to standard treatment with the Nidek laser. I personally recommend wavefront-guided treatment with the VISX for my patients who are eligible for treatment.
It is not to say Nidek is a bad laser. But comparing the standard ablatiobs with the Nidek compared to wavefront with eye movement tracking with the VISX - the VISX easily wins

Your son should be worried about not selecting the Visx S4 wavefront-guided laser over the Nidek EC-5000. Many studies show the probability of a good outcome with the Visx to be significantly greater than with the Nidek. Nidek has its place, but the Visx S4 is superior for most patients.

forget cost, choose the best, most advanced wavefront laser! The doctors are right in reccomending the latest and greatest, its superior! Trattler himself also points this out. Wavefront lasek or surface ablation is best.
