I had lasik surgery in June of 1999. I've had blurry vision since. Glasses help some but there still appears to be a haziness that glasses don't seem to help.

A few days ago, I was driving home on a dark road. The signs on the sides of the road are very blurry and bright. As a fluke, I decided to turn on the lights inside the car. Remarkably, a bit of the haziness disappeared. (The light reflected off the inside of the car constricting my pupils.) I turned the inside lights out, the haziness returned.

My uneducated guess is that my pupils dialate further than the diameter of my lasik surgery cut, and I'm looking through the edges of the surgery at night. I was told my dim light pupil diameter was 5mm. Should I have had the surgery? Is it possible I don't/didn't have a diameter of 5mm?

I also have a residual astigmatism and overcorrection, I'm told. The original optician says I'm plano, though. The glasses I wear, though, are about +1.5. If they should've used a larger diameter cut, can my situation be corrected?

Thank you,
Chris

Sounds like you figured it out on your own. Your pupil size is likely a factor in your decreased night vision. Your dim pupil size is likely greater than 5 mm since most excimer ablations are 6 mm or greater.

If you have residual refractive error too, then glasses for nighttime use will be helpful too.

Hi again. I'm actually Dean Hu, M.D. from Honolulu. Somehow my sign on got switched.

As far as what can be done, currently, not much. If you are overcorrected as you stated, then a hyperopic enhancement may help, but your optical zone will likely not change significantly. If your symptoms are causing you night driving difficulties, then dilute pilocarpine (pupil constricting) drops may help. Ask your doctor.

My doctor did, in passing, mention something about my pupil size. He suggested that I could try the pupil constricting eye drops. Would constricted pupils at night make it difficult for me to see things (details like reading or seeing distances)in the dark? Do your eyes feel any different when you use the drops (dryness, any strange sensations)?

Thank you for your time and knowledge,
Chris
