I was one of the first 100 people in the country to have RK surgery, some years ago. I had each eye done twice, once with conventional surgical instruments, the next with a "diamond" knife. At the time I could not count how many fingers I was holding up at the end of my own arm. I still had to wear glasses. Now I find that my eyesight has deteriorated, and have even gone far-sighted. I went to the optometrist yesterday and discovered that part of the reason my eyesight has deterioriated is due to the scar tissue in my eyes, AND that I have the beginnings of cataracts. Even though its too early to contemplate, can I even HAVE cataract surgery with all the scar tissue already there? And is there anything I can do now to help make my vision clearer? The prescription in my glasses remains about the same, but my distance vision is just awful, and I simply can't drive at night without being a danger to myself and anybody else on the road with me. What do you suggest? Can lasik even help at this point? Thanks in advance.

Of course you can have cataract surgery after RK.
Studies indicate that as many as 40% of post-RK patients become increasingly farsighted. By the way, it should come as no surprise that a nearly full-thickness corneal incision will create a scar. In the case of RK, four to sixteen individual incisions mean four to sixteen individual scars.

no way. Lasik does nothing to cateracts. Cateract surgury where they remove your cloudy lens and place clear IOLs is the solution. How myopic were you if you couldnt see your own fingers when you extend your arm? You may have gotten agressive RK with as many as 16 incisions to reduce your myopia and land you in thinner glasses. I know one lady online who went from -13 to -4 but ruined her night vision due to the pupils dilating thru the 16 incisions.

Wow...if I had two surgeries per eye, then I've probably got 30 or so scars in each eye. No wonder I can't see worth a darn. Well, that's from this side of my eyes. The optometrist said he was surprised I could see as well as I could. Thanks for the info.

What was your pescription before RK and how much myopia did RK reduce? You probably have 16 to 32 incisions.
