beverly- your vision seems to be getting worse because you have a vision problem called latent hyperopia. hyperopia means farsighted, and latent means that you have had this condition all of your life, but it has been latent, or controlled by the focusing muscles in your eye. as we age, those same focusing muscles lose their effectiveness. what you were able to see without glasses when you were twenty, now gets difficult to see. we notice it first with up close tasks, as it requires more focusing power to see up close than to see far away. but eventually, even the far away stuff gets blurry, and you begin to use glasses for driving as well as reading.
laser will not stabilize this process- but the natural history is that the vision does level out during the mid fifties. you shouldn't expect too much change in the correction after that.
good luck
