Central islands refer to their being an area that was poorly treated in the very center of the cornea. So on topography, there is an island of elevation corresponding to the poorly treated area.
Central islands are a form of irregular astigmatism, and glasses will not improve the vision. A hard contact lens can flatten the cornea and help the vision in a patient with a central island.

Please have your surgeon perform a topography and look at the topography together

Best of luck

I had lasik surgery for hyperopia 10-24-1997
and have had problems every since. I now know it was not an approved procedure at that time. A corneal specialist told me that the only way to get ridee of this "crappy vision" was by corneal transplant which I am reluctant to do.
I have read the article on this web site about customized lasik for Irregular astigmatism by Doctors Knorz and Jendritza and would like contact them to see if this procedure could help me, has this procedure been approved by the the FDA.

I had a Central Island & was seeing 20-20, but double (one sign on top of another). It was very frustrating. I had an enhancement in March & am now seeing 20-20 without the doubling!

Beverly,

Who did the enhancement? Did it remove the central island?
