Dr Trattle:

I have post numerious messages. I have complication on both of my eyes (wrinkles). I had two surgeries in both my eyes within two months. Now I have still been suffering severe dry eyes after six months.

I tried everything I could. plugs (lower and upper), flax seed oil ( 6 cap every day) , Hydroeye ( 4 cap every day) , billberry, restasis, lid scrub, warm compress, nigh time gel...

Base on your experience, can you let me know is it possible my cornear nerve get damaged permenantly? Is there any hope this condition will get better? I am so depressed and anxious now. Thanks.

Obviously any person can have unusual results - but in general the corneal nerves regenerate after LASIK. The most recent study found that it took 5 years for complete regeneration. I would expect that if we looked at incision sites in othe parts of the body - we would also see a delay in corneal nerve regeneration.
Regardless of your nerve status - there are a variety of things that you can do to help with your dry eye. My first recommendation would be for you to get an evaluation with Jim McCulley at SouthWestern Medical Center. He is one of the world's experts in dry eye - and he could definitely determine where you are and what your next steps should be.
Additional things you can try (under doctor's supervision):
Pulse of steroid eye drops
Moisture goggles
Make sure you do not have a fan on at night time, and make sure your air conditioning vents are not pointing towards your bed (these can all lead to evaporation)
Warm compresses (these can be very helpful)
Oral or topical minocycline/doxycycline
The use of other types of lubricating drops (mixing and matching a few can sometimes be helpful - like Soothe, Systane, liquigel, etc)

The key is you need careful treatment with a dry eye specialist who can monitor your degree of dry eye and help determine which interventions would be most helpful.

Best regards

Dr. Trattler,

If complete regeneration can take up to 5 years, does this also mean, that lasik induced dry eye can improve for up to 5-years post-op?? Has this actually been studied in lasik dry eye patients, or have you had any experience with patients improving so late after surgery? Thanks.

Do you drink a lot of water? Try also drinking a lot of water and a lot of fresh celery juice.

How many bilberry pills did u take?

The flax oil, omega 3, lots of water, bilberry really worked for me.
