I had lasik surgery performed in Januray of 2005. My vision was immediately corrected to 20/20 in my left eye and 20/30 in my right eye. The right eye was purposely undercorrected to allow me to see things like the dashboard on the car etc.
In May, 2005 I began to notice my left eye vision was deteriorating and blurring. I was told to use more drops and might possibly need Restasis.
In July of 2005 I could wait no longer and went to see my regular O.D. who informed me I had a refractive error in my left eye. Three days later I went back to my Lasik surgeons office and was told my vision had deterioriated and was given a prescription for Restasis. I pressed the issue for enhancemnt which was scheduled for August 4, 2005. I went for new measurements and wave fronts etc, on August 1 and was told to return on August 4, 2005 for my enhancement surgery.
When I returned on August 4, 2005 I was told out of the clear blue sky that I had "oil drop cataracts". My left eye was "diagnosed" as a 2+ and my right eye as trace. I was told to wear a contact for six to eight weeks and return for a checkup. However, my lasik surgeon does not do cataract surgery.
Does this whole experience seem odd to any of you M.D.s on this site. If I had not pressed the issue for enhancement I would still be using enough eye drops to float a boat and restasis. I have read that trauma and steroids can cause sudden onset of cataracts. Could either be the cause? I went to my primary care physician and requested screening for diabetes and was reminded that I had such bloodwork less than one year ago and no signs of diabetes were present.
I would appreciate some feedback on opinions and advice. Please HELP!

Cataracts can occur suddenly, even without LASIK surgery. As well, atleast your surgeon noticed that the cause of your shift in vision was the sudden development of a cataract.
We had a strange case at our office. A patient scheduled for LASIK cancelled her surgery and rescheduled her surgery for a week later. The day after she was supposed to have surgery, she came to the office reporting sudden loss of vision in one eye. She had a retinal detachment. If she had undergone LASIK - everyone would have thought that the LASIK caused the retinal detachment. But thankfully she rescheduled her surgery.
The point is - cataract, retinal detachments, and other problems can occur with or without surgery.
I hope this helps
