"20/20 BCVA but are Flaps causing my vision problems?" Posted by Mike - Farmington Hill, MI on 23:34:22 5/04/2001

I had a thin flap in one eye and suspect the other flap is thin too. Both eyes have some striae but only was effecting my best corrected vision. The flap that could not be corrected was lifted at 6 weeks post-op and it was found to be thin (button holed or melted in the middle).
At 4 months post-op I am now correctable to 20/20 (or close) in both eyes but still have problems with glare, ghosting, starburst, halos, and contrast in indoor lighting or at night.
Is it likely that my vision problems are still related to the flaps vs something else (pupil size, ablation zone, steepness, etc.)? My second opinion doctor seems to think that all of my problems are flap related.
I would love to be able to answer your question. I am glad to hear that you can be corrected to 20/20. It is certainly possible that your flaps are the problem. But, do glasses or soft contacts eliminate your symptoms? If so, then residual refractive error may be the answer.
another possiblity is pupil size. You can ask your doctor about trying a drop like Alphagan that will cause your pupil to be smaller at night time. This may help reduce or eliminate your night time problems.
I hope this helps answer your question
Best of luck

Dr. Trattler
I really apreciate you taking time to answer my questions.
Glasses and soft contacts work well in bright light conditions (outdoors) but once I walk indoors (even well lighted areas indoors) my vision quality worsens and it becomes a bit blurry and I get lots of glare.
My pupil size in dim light was measured to be 5.0 mm by the doctor. My own measurements show them to be 6.0 to 6.5 mm (at times) under the same dim light conditions.
