I have read many posts here about halo effects, starbursts, etc. These all seem to be related to the flap and the area of abalation. I think that these are managable issues; having to do mostly with the care and precision of the surgeon and his/her use of the microkeratome.

However, my question is this: Is there any evidence that the laser itself damages the backside of the eye (the epithelial cells of the retina)? I worry about the long-term affects of this, and wonder if anybody has studied the post-mortum sections of the retinas of post-lazik patients.

Vince,

The excimer laser beam energy stops at the cornea. The excimer laser energy is 'absorbed' by the carbon bonds on the cornea and by water. There is no evidence to suggest any retina damage from excimer lasers....Good question!

Good luck,
