"Am I really NOT a candidate" Posted by Nathaniel - Colchester, VT on 22:54:45 1/25/2001

Hello,
Today, after researching LASIK through books and on the web I finally had an appointment for an evaluation at our areas only LASIK surgeon. Much to my dismay I was told that I am NOT a candidate for the procedure but after reading the posts to this board I'm beginning to wonder. My contact lens prescription is -9.5 for both eyes. The tests performed were an autorefraction and I believe a measurement of the topography of my corneas, which came in at about -44. Driving back to work from the evaluation several things struck me: I was never asked when I last wore my contact lenses (I was wearing my glasses and have been for the past month), the technician operating these instruments didn't seem very familiar with them, and also that the thickness of my cornea wasn't measured. My question is: are the two parameters measure enough to rule me out for LASIK, or is this surgeon uncomfortable with high myops? This is not a full time LASIK center, the equipment is brought in twice monthly, and today happened to be one of those days (I heard the tick tick tick of the laser; we use excimer lasers at work) so I didn't get to see the surgeon. Any advice would be appreciated.

Woody,
Make an appointment with the LASIK surgeon/ophthalmologist and then get your questions answered. Unfortunately, some centers have hired staff answer medical questions which often ends up providing incomplete or erroneous advice.
