I recently tried to change my contact lenses to my new prescription (-13.25 for glasses) and found the specs on the -11.5 or so lenses had me seeing thru the edges (this resulted in two sprained ankles after falling down stairs). I tried all available contacts in that power but had to go back to the previous undercorrection.
At this level of vision, risk is unacceptable, since glasses do not provide quality vision if lenses cannot be used post-operatively in case of failure/insufficient improvement/side effects. I have experienced halos (especially at night) since passing the -9 mark years ago, and ghosting when my eyes and the planets are not exactly aligned. I would consider surgery to improve vison enough to be able to wear reliable and reasonably priced contacts. Even now, I need reading glasses all the time (+1.5, with my current undercorrected vision, and I am only 46 years old!), and have experienced steadily declining vision, around -.5 every year or two. So I am becoming a little overwhelmed by the complexity of trying to see well.
I have heard a (very) little about a reversible and adjustable technique involving insertion of a ring in the cornea, any info if this is 1) good for high myopia, 2)usuable with wearing contacts 3)side effects 4)available somewhere soon.
Jackie,
The intracorneal ring only corrects up 3 diopters, so would not be helpful to you. At you level of myopia, youa re a candidate for LASIK. However, since you are over 46 you will need reading glasses after the procedure - as LASIK only corrects the distance vision.

Man, I was in pretty much in your position, with a
-10.25 prescription. Eyes changed every year or two. I finally got fed up. Lasik was a no-brainer. Glasses sucked.
