I keep reading about how the phakic iol's have been used in Europe for 15+ years, but I have not been able to find any of the data on complication rates (retinal detachments, cataracts, endothelial cell loss, etc..) going back that far. Most of what I have found is the FDA data and other recent studies. Also, I have not been able to find data on how the phakic iol's compare to lasik for someone with -9 ; -8 vision. I am 22 years old and the phakic iol sounds very promising - or at least maybe a better option than lasik.

I have performed phakic IOLs in patients with myopia as low as - 6.00 with very good results. The biggest risks are infection and endothelial cell loss, along with cataracts. There are of course risks with every procedure.
I hope this helps

Both phakic IOLs and LASIK have risks. The things that can occur are very different with these procedures. The relative risk will depend on each individual patient and their particular anatomy and preop findings.
