My sister had LASIK on Feb. 7th this year. After the operation she used TobraDex for a week and then changed for FML. But on March 2nd she found that she is pregnant. Thinking that there are some kinds of hormone in these eyedrops, she consulted her ophthalmologist and was told that she must give up this child. Meanwhile her ophthalmologist asked her to use ACULAR instead of FML.
My sister made up her mind not to have abortion and stop use any eyedrops. I'm very worried about her eyes and her baby, so I want to ask:
Will these eyedrops have any negative effects on the embryo? Is it dangerous to stop use eyedrops at this time? Is there any other eyedrops she can use which will not influence the baby?
Thanks a lot!

Patients can be on medications of the eye such as antibiotics or steroids during a person's first trimester for a variety of reason's besides LASIK. The key is to talk with your OBGYN and discuss the potential risks of these medications. Your eye doctor should not be making any of these very personal decisions for you.

Best of luck

Thanks for your quick reply.
But it is my sister's lasik doctor who prescribed the TobraDex, FML and ACULAR eyedrops for her and asked her use them as necessary medication after LASIK.
What we really want to know is whether these eyedrops will have any negative effect on the fetus. I read in this forum some people got pregnant within weeks after LASIK and it seems their babies were all right, but I don't know what eyedrops they used and whether they used the same eyedrops with my sister.
Thank you for your help!

You need to have your sister talk with her OBGYN. Her OBGYN doctor would be the expert on the use of medications during the early part of pregnancy.

I am sorry that I can not add more - this is just more in the realm of a person's OBGYN.

Best of luck
