I am considering on becoming pregnant and breastfeeding. I do know that my eyesight may have changed after breastfeeding my first child. I could not wear my contacts during this time as well.
Is there any literature on women having the Lasik surgery, becoming pregnant and breastfeeding and then having any problems or changes with their eyesight? I don't want to go through with this procedure only to have my eyes change later with pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Any comments would be appreciated
Thank you.

Nadine,

I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere, either this board or another Web site that getting pregnant and/or using birth control pills can cause serious regression within a certain time frame (something like a year) after having LASIK. I would definately do more research if you're thinking about getting pregnant before having the procedure!

dear nadine,

i have answered this question on this board before, and somehow we are supposed to be able to find ole postings, but in any case, the correct answer to the best of our knowledge is that you should avoid changing your hormone level for at least 3 months after lasik surgery. this also goes for women taking birth control pills or hormone replacement and thinking about making a change in their medication.

if you have already had your next child and are currently breast feeding we ask that you have lasik at least three months after stopping the breast feeding.

the idea is that #1 your vision must be stable so that we know what to correct and #2 the change in hormones with pregnancy or a change in medications can cause scarring in the cornea which can decrease the vision.

i personally have seen this in 3 patient, and after the situation stabilized we were able to perform a retreatment procedure which took care of the problem.

i practice in agoura hills, at the northern end of la county. i'd be happy to answer any further questions or see you in consultation. my office number is , and of course there is no charge for the consultation.

good luck
