Doctor, Do you know if Dr. Bart Carey in the San Jose Area in CA
is a good doctor? My mother in law had LASIK done by him and
was happy with it, but I am concerned. He does his surgeries at
Stanford Laser Eye Center. I wear contact lenses now, and I have
to wear Cooper Lenses because my pupils are large and when I
wear normal contacts, I get a "ghosting" or halo around lights in
a dark room. The diameter of my contacts is 14.2. Does that
mean my pupils are 14.2 mm? I tried to measure mine in a dark
room, they looked about 8 mm to me. When I last had them
dilated, they looked about 8 mm also. Are my pupils too large
for LASIK? Dr. Carey wants to do INTRALaser on me, using an
eximer laser for the correction, and IntraLace instead of the
mikrotome. He is also going to be using Wavefront Procedure
on my eyes. What do you think? If I do get ghosting, will it only
be as bad as it was with the contacts that were causing ghosting
on lights in dark rooms because the field of vision was too
small?
Thank you. I am having the LASIK done in 1.5 weeks, I'd really
like your help.

I'm sure Dr. Trattler will have excellent information for you, but in the mean time you may want to read about Lasik and size at http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/subjects/lasik_pupil_size.htm and read http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/subjects/wavefront_custom_lasik.htm for wavefront information

I do not know this surgeon personally - but it sounds like he is using the latest technology. Large pupils are a risk for night vision issues - but wavefront-guided treatments help reduce this risk.

I hope this helps
