Jill & Al

The surgeon I work for has performed LASIK on approximately 50 patients who have previously had RK. Of those patients, one did have a cap that seperated in couple places at the old RK cuts. That patient did turn out to see 20/25 and is doing fine. Obviously there is an increased risk of complication with patients who have had RK, but our experience has been that this risk is small. Make sure you find a very experienced surgeon, one that's performed LASIK on previous RK patients. Don't go "bargain shopping". If a complication did occur, you want the most skilled surgeon possible to handle it.
Good luck.

You likely don't need LASIK, just over the counter reading glasses. Your phenomenon is neither myopia or hyperopia. You are experiencing presbyopia (loss of near vision without change of distance vision). This change is UNIVERSAL. Nobody escapes it. The average age of onset is, guess what, 43. If you wear glasses, then you'll need bifocals. If you don't wear glasses, then you'll need over-the-counter reading glasses.

Any additional refractive surgery (LASIK and the like) could get you better near vision, but you will have to sacrifice distance vision acuity.
At this point, you can only have one or the other, or one of each with monovision.

Don't worry, you just happen to be experiencing something normal.

Although it performing LASIK after RK has a good success rate, this procedure is not suitable for you. To begin with, your problem is with reading. Since you are over the age of 40, you have developed what everyone gets as they get older - a condition called Presbyopia (please view our FAQ on Presbyopia). Presbyopia refers to the loss of the ability to read with age. This can not be improved with LASIK, as LASIK is a procedure that is aimed at improving distance vision. Your distance vision is hopefully satisfactory.

I hope this is helpful
