I had RK in both eyes about 15 years ago.
Started at -10 diopters. First had 16 double depth
cuts followed by 8 single depth cut touch-ups.
Eyes healed very well no complications. Have not ried to wear contacts since. Only problem was the eyes regressed back to -7.5 diopters.
Questions: How much additional difficulty does the RK surgery add to the LASIK?
How important is prior experience performing LASIK over RKs?
I have performed LASIK after RK with good results.
There are also reports in the literature that
LASIK after RK is possible, with relatively good
results.
However, there are additional risks with LASIK
after RK. First, it is possible that the
previous cuts made during RK can open up during
the procedure. This can be fixed by carefully
replacing the flap or with sutures.
The predicatability with LASIK after RK is also
less. RK worked by placing incisions in the
cornea that weakened the cornea. By that, I mean
the cornea took on a new shape due to the radial
incisions in the cornea. The laser with LASIK
will try to reshape the cornea as well. As you
can imagine, the results are not as predictable.
You should talk with a ALSIK surgeon who has
previous experience with this situation to get a
better feel of the risks and benefits of LASIK in
your situation
