Can you do Lasik surgery or any eye corrective surgery on someone with Retinitus Pigmentosa? My son is only 12 but we are always thinking of the future, how about severly nearsighted? His corrected vision is 20/50 without glasses he is legally blind? I also have a question for myself. I have one eye that can't see the big E on the chart. I do not have distance vision because of this, the other eye is pretty good. I have glasses, but don't have to wear them. Would this surgery help my one bad eye?

RP is a progressive degeneration of the retina. i would almost never consider operating for elective surgery on a patient like this. i can only think of extreme circumstances where the patient could not wear contact lenses or glasses because of some physical disability, and lasik would increase his quality of life- but that would only be after serious discussion about the risks and benefits in unknown territory such as RP.
