I'll just give you the basics. If there is some inflammation under the flap due to debris, epithelial ingrowth, infection, etc, then certain natural chemicals can be released by the dying cells and the immune cells that are invading the area - this can cause significant permanent damage to the flap and vision problems. Also a flap melt could occur in someone with a autoimmune disease like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Untreated Epithelial ingrowth can be a major cause of flap melts. Thank goodness melts are very rare. As far as enhancements after a melt, I've honestly have never had to deal with this problem. I can't give you a good answer as to what your risk is. Flap melts can be a very difficult problem.
